In November 2009, a tragic event unfolded in Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave that would forever change the landscape of caving in the United States. Nutty Putty Cave, located west of Utah Lake, was known for its intricate and tight passageways, attracting both amateur and seasoned cavers. On the evening of November 24, 2009, John entered the cave with friends and family, aiming to explore its depths before the Thanksgiving holiday. While navigating the cave, he mistook an uncharted passage for a known route called the “Birth Canal” and became wedged headfirst in a crevice measuring approximately 10 by 18 inches.

Rescue efforts commenced promptly, with over 100 personnel working tirelessly to free John from his precarious position. Despite their dedication, the challenging conditions, including the cave’s narrow confines and John’s inverted position, complicated the rescue. After 27 hours of being trapped, John succumbed to cardiac arrest, a result of the physical strain and restricted blood flow caused by his position.

In the aftermath, authorities deemed it too risky to retrieve John’s body. Consequently, Nutty Putty Cave was permanently sealed, serving as both his final resting place and a somber reminder of the perils associated with caving. The incident prompted discussions within the caving community about safety protocols and the importance of proper preparation and caution when exploring such environments.
